Middle Laps

"A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more." -Steve Prefontaine

It occurred to me as I was in the middle of my running workout today that the "middle laps" often are what make or break us in fitness and in life. It is easy to start strong because the start is when you have energy and enthusiasm and freshness. And it's easy to finish strong because you know you are almost at a resting place/milestone. The "middle laps", though, require you dig down and pay the price when you are out of energy, freshness and enthusiasm but the end is still not in sight. The middle laps require faith, patience, suffering, endurance, and vision. So here's to everyone gutting it out and excelling in their middle laps from now 'til the Olympics and beyond.

  2. Here is the link for the thinking behind my program right now. I use the "5 on, 2 off" protocol and usually play basketball on Saturdays.

  3. 1 minute sprint, followed by 1 minute rest.
    5 sets

I did my best to figure out my one rep max on bench and squat today. It did not go well. Are you sure we can't have a burpee event in here somewhere?
